Vizhinjam, close to Kerala’s famous Kovalam beach is a natural fishing harbour. It was a flourishing port during the 18-19th century, which remained neglected since the end of the 19th century. The Lighthouse in Vizhinjam was completed on 30th June 1972. Lighthouse Beach, stretching to the north toward Kovalam, is a popular tourist attraction, and as a result this lighthouse is one of the most visited lighthouses of southern India.
Fun Fact: Foundations of a 9th century fort were discovered near the lighthouse in late 2005.
