According to Ayurveda philosophy, the Malayalam month of “Karkidaka,” the final month of the traditional Malayalam calendar (usually falling in July and August), is characterized by monsoon rains and a prevalence of common diseases. The frequent rains cause the climate to shift abruptly to humid and cool, leading to temperature variations that heavily disrupt the Vata dosha, resulting in numerous health issues, especially those linked to imbalanced Vata.

To prevent illnesses and lessen their severity, people in Kerala observe this season by undergoing Ayurveda treatments, reading spiritual books, and adhering to a special diet. This rigorous seasonal regimen helps cleanse and rejuvenate the body, preparing individuals physically and mentally to welcome the New Year and the upcoming harvest season marked by the Onam festival. The positive energy acquired through these treatments and dietary practices is believed to last throughout the year.

A key dietary practice during this month is the consumption of “Karkidaka kanji,” a special medicated porridge made with brown rice, green gram (mung bean), and coconut milk infused with medicinal herbs.
