Why she came to Rockholm

A 42-year-old guest came to Rockholm with long-standing digestive discomfort, including acidity, persistent heartburn, burping and bloating. She also described an irregular bowel habit and a cough that she associated with the heartburn.

At consultation, her main concerns included:

  • Acidity and persistent heartburn
  • Burping and bloating
  • An irregular bowel habit
  • A cough she associated with the heartburn

She was looking for a physician-led Panchakarma programme to support digestive comfort, regular bowel function and a settled daily routine around food.

The Ayurvedic assessment

Following a detailed consultation and examination, the physician understood her presentation in Ayurvedic terms as a Pitha–Vatha imbalance (Pitha-Vatha Vikruthi). The programme was planned to support Pitha and Vatha balance, with attention to the heartburn, bloating and irregular bowel habit she described.

Her personalised programme

A personalised Ayurveda programme was planned and monitored by the physician according to the guest’s assessment and her response during the stay. Her programme included:

  • Snehana – Snehapanam (internal intake of medicated ghee) and Abhyanga (warm medicated-oil body massage)
  • Swedana – medicated steam and Podikizhi (warm herbal-powder poultice)
  • Shodhana – Virechana (physician-supervised purgation), Nasyam (medicated nasal therapy) and Snehavasthy (medicated-oil enema)
  • Rasayana – Njavarakizhi (poultice of medicinal Njavara rice cooked in milk and herbal decoction) as the restorative phase
  • Internal Ayurvedic medicines – as prescribed
  • Yoga and meditation
  • Customised diet and lifestyle guidance – including guidance on which foods to avoid after discharge

How the 21 nights unfolded

Through the first week she said the heartburn and cough continued much as before. As the programme went on she reported that the heartburn was easing and that her bowel movements were becoming more regular. At her final review she reported regular bowel movements and a considerable reduction in heartburn, bloating and the associated cough.

As part of her continued diet and lifestyle guidance, she was advised to avoid processed, fermented and packaged foods after discharge.

What she reported by the end of her stay

Outcomes are individual. During her stay, this guest reported:

  • Better digestion
  • More regular bowel movements
  • Reduced heartburn
  • Reduced bloating
  • Reduced cough associated with the heartburn

A note from the Rockholm physician

“Heartburn of this kind rarely settles in a few days, and the longer 21-night stay gave her programme the time it needed. She kept to the therapies, internal medicines and diet with real discipline, even in the first week when there was little change to show for it. By the final review she reported regular bowel movements and a considerable reduction in heartburn, bloating and the cough. I advised her to continue the prescribed internal medicines and to hold to the diet we agreed, particularly avoiding processed, fermented and packaged foods, once she was home.”
