Why she came to Rockholm

A 35-year-old guest approached Rockholm after about a year of persistent stress and feelings of anxiety, which she said had begun to affect her concentration, her sleep and her day-to-day life.

At consultation she described:

  • Ongoing stress and feelings of anxiety
  • Disturbed sleep, with waking during the night
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Emotional eating and cravings for sweet foods
  • An irregular menstrual cycle
  • Frequent headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Dry eyes

She was looking for a physician-led Panchakarma programme to support relaxation, better sleep and a greater sense of balance in her daily life.

The Ayurvedic assessment

Following a detailed consultation and examination, the physician understood her presentation in Ayurvedic terms as a Vatha–Pitha imbalance (Vatha-Pitha Vikruthi). The programme was planned to support Vatha and Pitha balance, with attention to the mental restlessness, disturbed sleep and reduced concentration she described.

Her personalised programme

All therapies were planned and monitored by the physician and adjusted according to her individual response during the stay. Her programme included:

  • Snehana – internal oleation with medicated ghee, and Abhyanga (warm medicated-oil body massage)
  • Swedana – Elakizhi (warm herbal-leaf poultice) and medicated steam
  • Shodhana – Virechana (physician-supervised purgation) and Snehavasthy (medicated-oil enema)
  • Head and calming therapies – Thalapothichil (cooling herbal-paste head pack), Sirodhara (a steady stream of warm medicated oil over the forehead), Thakradhara (medicated buttermilk stream) and Lepam (herbal paste application)
  • Rasayana – Ksheeradhara (medicated milk stream) as the restorative phase
  • Internal Ayurvedic medicines – as prescribed
  • Yoga and meditation
  • Customised diet and lifestyle guidance

How the 14 nights unfolded

During the first three days she said she still had occasional headaches and felt mentally restless. From the fourth day she reported feeling calmer and finding it easier to concentrate. Through the second week she described a growing sense of wellbeing, and said she felt happier and more energetic. At her final review she reported feeling considerably more relaxed and calm, with better sleep, concentration and energy.

What she reported by the end of her stay

Outcomes are individual. During her stay, this guest reported:

  • Reduced feelings of stress
  • Improved sleep quality
  • Better energy
  • Fewer headaches
  • Improved concentration
  • A greater sense of calm and overall wellbeing

A note from the Rockholm physician

“She engaged fully with her therapies, internal medicines, yoga and the daily routine we set for her, and that made a real difference to how she settled into the programme. The headaches and restlessness of the first days eased quickly, and by the final review she told us her sleep, concentration and energy were much improved. I advised her to continue the prescribed internal medicines and home-care measures, and to keep to the sleep and mealtime routine we had worked on after she returned home.”
